Celebration America is Liberty Day's effort to organize Constitution Celebrations around Constitution Day (September 17th, the anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution). Liberty Day's premier Colorado and National program for teenagers is an awesome, one-of-a-kind opportunity for high school students! Our celebrations will consist of either large events, such as our second annual UCD Constitution Day Celebration at the University of Colorado at Denver, or in-class student-to-student teaching! The Declaration of Independence was the promise, the Constitution the fulfillment. It's time to celebrate it!

Second Annual UCD Constitution Day Celebration

In 2004, Congress passed, and President Bush signed, Public Law 108-447, which states, in Sec. 111 Division J - SEC. 111(b), that all levels of educational institutions that receive federal funds are required to educate students on our U.S. Constitution on or around September 17th, the day the Constitution was ratified in 1787.

In order to help fulfill the federal mandates contained in the law and celebrate the day, which is most commonly known as Constitution Day, Liberty Day's Second Annual UCD Constitution Day Celebration will take place on Saturday, September 20th, in Colorado's capital city. This exciting event will feature, among other presentations, two exciting debates showing how the Constitution works in the real world, and exciting breakout sessions with people who deal with government and politics on a daily basis. We have also invited Colorado's governor, Bill Ritter, to attend this event as well! The event will be organized around the Constitution entirely for the involvement of all teenagers in Colorado, which, to our knowledge, is entirely unlike any other program in the state.

Stay tuned to CelebrationAmerica.org for updates on the event as they break!

Student-Teacher Program

The other way high school and college students can play a part in Liberty Day's celebration of the U.S. Constitution is through our Student-Teacher Program. This is Liberty Day's way of not only letting high school students participate in celebrating the Constitution, but where they get to really do something to make a difference in their community.

Through this program, high school and college students go into 5th grade classes to teach about the contents of our nation's founding document - the Constitution - and what it's all about. They can either choose to go into a class by themselves or with a friend, whichever they would prefer.

Liberty Day will work to provide the student-teachers with all they'll need to do their lesson, such as the books and question cards Liberty Day distributes. We are also working on a guide that they will be given to help them teach the material, and we will be available to answer any and all questions.

When Jimmy Sengenberger went into his sister's 5th grade class in May, it meant a lot to the kids that he took the time to come in and introduce them to the Constitution. The impact of someone from the outside—especially a young person that kids look up to—teaching kids about a concept is truly great. The experience is rewarding to both the kids and the student-teachers and will really make a difference. Liberty Day's Student-Teacher program is your chance to, as Gandhi put it, "be the change you want to see in the world"!
